The Brookwood Philosophy

The Brookwood philosophy rests on the twin pillars of tradition and innovation. Through a rigorously pursued academic program, a well-rounded mind is formed; and through hands-on learning, flexibility and the ability to apply knowledge in a changing world are developed.

The faculty of the Brookwood School make a commitment to the development of each student:

  • by aiding the discovery of individual character, while mindful of social responsibility
  • by helping to surmount limitations, thereby building confidence
  • by assisting in the exploration of the world—both local and global—thus expanding awareness

With sensitivity to the child's individual needs and interests, The Brookwood Preschool's experienced staff of teachers and aides creates an environment that encourages the child's natural curiosity about and exploration of the world. Using the Montessori hands-on method with concrete materials, the child develops a readiness for future learning, each in his or her own time and way.

In the upper grades standards are high. The curriculum expands in relation to the child's development, branching out from the Montessori roots. The traditional subjects are integrated around theme study units, and in relation to them. Theme studies allow for the accommodation of individual student interests and abilities, while promoting deeper, more comprehensive learning because the standard subjects are not taught in isolation. Creativity and the growth of the capacity for critical thought are emphasized throughout.

The school is unique. Through extensive use of the resources that the Cooperstown area has to offer, students make the town, cultural institutions, the lake and the woodlands, their "extended campus." The aim is for students to reach the highest level of academic achievement while cultivating a deep appreciation for nature, a sense of stewardship for the environment, and responsibility to the community at large.

The Brookwood School admits students of any race, color, national and ethnic origin to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to its students at the school. It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, religion, or gender in administration or its educational policies, admission policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school administered programs.
