Upper Elementary
The curriculum for the Upper Elementary class reinforces acquired skills while adding a new level of academic challenge. We encourage our students to question, and to investigate more fully the various subject areas as they take on more demanding projects and learn to apply organization, analysis and study skills.
Language arts concentrates on reading, writing, and mechanics. The curriculum is rich in children's literature and students acquire an appreciation of reading exposure to many literary forms. Students learn to observe the rules of proper spelling and grammar as they write and express their thoughts.
Our math text is Addison-Wesley, which adheres to the standards of the NCTM, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. We stress the mastery of the basic skills; manipulatives are often used to help students understand abstractions. Social studies are interdisciplinary and thematic in approach.
We take advantage of regional resources to help cultivate a sense of local and global community. Among the skills and concepts covered in the social studies curriculum are Mythology, Local History, Communities of Long Ago, Maps, and Globes, Governments and Patriotism, The United States, and Geography—Biomes. A variety of texts, literature, poetry, artwork, and documentaries serve to enhance the Social Studies program.
The goal of our science curriculum is to create a sense of wonder about the sciences and the natural world. Our approach is theme-based and interdisciplinary, incorporating hands-on and multisensory activities. We use both the indoor and outdoor "laboratories," students learn the steps of scientific inquiry, sensory development, methods of experimentation, data recording, and proper use of scientific equipment. We cover a number of topics including Nutrition, Astronomy, Weather, Conservation, Physical Science and Geology.
