Lower Elementary

The Lower Elementary Class has its roots in the Montessori tradition. Children learn in a natural, integrated, and imaginative way. We seek to encourage each child's interests and talents, in order to develop self-discipline, and intellectual curiosity. Teachers are sensitive to each child and work to make each child feel secure and confident. The children have a wide variety of activities to choose from. These activities are carefully designed to challenge and interest the child.
We value each child's abilities and strengths. The program is designed to build on these strengths and encourage the children to reach new levels. We utilize manipulatives in every area of education, particularly in reading and mathematics. The incorporation of all senses enables the child to fully internalize what they are learning. We also use the Explode the Code series of books for language arts instruction. These books supplement the children's reading instruction . Science and geography are other areas of study which we focus. The class learns about several continents in depth; they study the people, topography, language, food, history and much more. Science includes experimentation with physical properties, a study of the human body and a unit on dinosaurs, among many others.
