Before & After School
Before and After School Care at The Brookwood School provides quality care and numerous age-appropriate activities for children aged 3-12. This includes Before School Care supervision starting at 6:30 am to 8:15 am, Pre-School After School Care from 11:45 am to 5:30 pm, and school-age After School Care from 2:30 pm-5:30 pm. Full-day childcare (6:30 am-5: 30 pm) is available on snow days, vacation, and conference days.
Here is some information that may be helpful:
Pre-school children enter After School Care at 11:45 when they come in from the playground for lunch. A typical day will find them eating in the multi-purpose room from noon to 12:30 followed by a rest hour in order to give each child some quiet, “down time” to themselves. Stories and quiet music are enjoyed during this quiet time. Three-year-olds are asked to bring in a blanket for nap time. For four-year-olds, we encourage buying a nap roll from us at a cost of $20 ($10 for used). The rolls and blankets are sent home every other week for laundering and should return with the child the following Monday. Children are welcome to bring a small soft sleep toy for rest time. Other personal toys are asked to be left at home. After rest time, children are supervised on the playground. Exercise and fresh air is a valued part of each afternoon. An extra set of clothes left at Brookwood is encouraged, as we are sometimes messy in our exploration and play. Free nutritious snacks are offered each afternoon followed by an opportunity to participate in one of the many theme-based after-school activities.
School-Age children join the After School program at 2:30 pm. Students of Cooperstown Central School are encouraged to attend After School Care at Brookwood; our bus picks up students at 2:35 in the elementary school driveway circle and arrives at Brookwood at 2:45 pm.
Opportunities abound for children to participate in indoor and outdoor recreation, art and crafts, cooking, reading, independent projects, and homework help. Unlike many after school programs, at Brookwood, After School Care is available every weekday until 5:30 pm and when regular school is closed. Full-day childcare is available in the same environment in which After School care is held.
Students are greeted off the bus in a welcoming, individual manner. After the long school day, children are gently guided through our program which includes a healthy snack, circle time, homework help, independent projects, outdoor play (structured group games, nature exploration, and snow tubing in the winter), art and craft activities, and other indoor structured activities like cooking and reading, as well as open-ended, free play.
Our comprehensive, “kids first” program if focused on the whole child, recognizing that each child needs and deserves respect. We keep the groups small to allow plenty of individual attention with skilled and caring teachers.
We strive to provide the most enjoyable, supervised environment for your child, one that allows plenty of choices for socializing, exploring new interests and discovering new talents. We feature daily themes such as game day, discovery day (science/cooking), dress up and pretend day (young performers in action), arts day, and building day. In this familiar and safe environment, staffed by caring adults, your child’s individual needs are sure to be met as they develop positive relationships with adults.
Important Things to Know:
The hourly rate is $5.45. An afternoon block is also available for $280 per month/ or $5.45 per hour, Monday – Friday, 2:30-5:30 pm. Pick-up time is at 5:30 pm, and as our staff members often have commitments of their own after work, we ask that you make every effort to be on time. There is an additional charge of $5.00 for every 10 minutes past 5:30 pm.
