  History of The Brookwood School

The Brookwood School is a not-for-profit, independent, school, chartered (PK-8) by the NY State Department of Education. The Brookwood School is licensed by The New York State Office of Children and Family Services, to provide childcare for children six weeks through twelve years of age.

The school was formally chartered as a non-profit independent day school in 1996, but the roots of the school date back to 1981 when the Christian Hill Montessori School for Pre-school was founded.  When founder Ann Weinke announced her retirement (1995), a group of committed parents came together as a Board of Trustees to ensure the perpetuation of the program and to guide expansion of the school.

Between 1996 and 2003, as the pre-school and elementary enrollment increased, the program expanded to include childcare in response to a growing need in the area.  In order to accommodate the growing needs for childcare in Otsego County, the Board of Trustees in 2004 launched a capital campaign to raise funds to build an addition.  In August 2006, a 15,000 square foot expansion was completed.

The Brookwood School Today
The School now enrolls students beginning with childcare from 6 weeks through Preschool. Preschool overlaps with our school programs and includes ages through sixth grade. The youngest grades begin with Montessori-based, hands-on, interactive learning activities. These educational threads continue through the upper grades. In small, informal classes, creative dialogue and independent study are emphasized. The curriculum is integrated across areas and ages.

The Brookwood School is unique.  Through extensive use of the resources that the Cooperstown area has to offer, students make the town, cultural institutions, the lake, and the woodlands their “extended campus.”  The aim is for students to reach the highest level of academic achievement while cultivating a deep appreciation for nature, a sense of stewardship for the environment, and a keen awareness of their responsibility to the community.

Brookwood is located in the village of Toddsville, approximately three miles from Cooperstown on County Route 59. The school is situated on 23.5 acres bordered by Oaks creek. This country setting provides a suitable "lab" for science, wildlife study, and gardening. Year-round outdoor activities include sledding during winter months and soccer, softball, and other sports in the spring and fall.

We are a small rural school with students who come from over fifteen communities, including Cooperstown, Cherry Valley, Fly Creek, Franklin, Milford, Oneonta and Schenevus.
